A RECENT EVENT, the "Crisis, Catharsis and Contemplation" exhibition in Melbourne's St Patrick's Cathedral, has brought into sharp relief the culture wars that divide and bedevil the Catholic Church. The exhibition was part of the annual Carnivale Christi festival, an initiative of culturally minded Australian Catholics. The controversy generated by the Melbourne exhibition resulted in the cancellation of a second showing which had been scheduled for the crypt of Sydney's St Mary's Cathedral.
