   each summer great-aunt came to stay 
 
   days before dad would growl 
   not that old maid again 
   we girls would giggle 
   behind mother who was kind 
   slip away to practise going cross-eyed 
   and walking pigeon-toed 
 
   we'd hover at the bedroom door
