Banca Popolare Italiana not discussing possible mergers at today's board meeting.

MILAN (AFX) - A Banca Popolare Italiana spokesman said the bank will hold a board meeting today, but will not discuss any possible mergers of the bank, rejecting broker speculation in morning notes.

Instead, the board is discussing its reply to a Bank of Italy report on Popolare Italiana, he said, adding that this reply is a formality.

The Popolare Italiana board is nearly certain to meet again on Sept 27 and Oct 4, he said, but no details on the agenda are available.
