A new category of colonial Philadelphia needlework has been identified. I have named it the Tree of Life pictorial group because the eight known examples all feature a dominant tree with intertwined branches of flowers or leaves characteristic of that motif. All are silk-on-silk embroideries, two of which (Figs. 1, la, and 8) have not previously been recorded or published. These Tree of Life embroideries were made in colonial Philadelphia, presumably by the daughters of prosperous families.
