The first chronicle of the French West Indies was written by the Jesuit priest Jacques Bouton in 1640 and describes how the colonists slept in cotton hammocks, which sometimes served as couches during the day. The only piece of furniture would have been a wooden chest, in which its owner kept his belongings. (1)
