The fortunate discovery among the Brown family papers of a 1760 bill of sale (Fig. 1) sent by the acclaimed Newport cabinetmaker John Goddard to the merchant John Brown has allowed for the firm documentation to Goddard of several of Brown's Furnishings that were previously only attributed to him. (1) The pieces include a tea table and roundabout chair (Figs. 4 and 5) surviving at the house Brown built in 1786, now the John Brown House of the Rhode Island Historical Society in Providence, and a roundabout chair and drop-leaf table currently in a private collection (Figs. 2, 2a, and 6).
