The mid-1980s were the recent high point of public confidence in the U.S. Supreme Court. Then came a dip, followed by a slow decade-long rise. Public confidence was not affected by the Court's involvement in the 2000 Presidential election. Over the past dozen years, Democrats and Republicans have differed noticeably in their views of the high court, as the chart at the bottom left shows. Most Americans say the Court has about the right amount of power. A quarter believe it is too powerful; 11 percent, not powerful enough.

Today, around three out of ten Americans say the current Supreme Court is too liberal. A quarter feel it is too conservative. Most say it is about right. Solid majorities agree with the Roe v. Wade abortion decision and the Lawrence decision on homosexual activity. A ...
