British Prime Minister Tony Blair often tells his skeptical public that 60 percent of the U.K.'s trade and 3 million jobs "depend on" British membership in the European Union. These claims are believed to act as a major brake on otherwise popular demands that the U.K. withdraw from E.U. membership.
