Way back in 1874, Charles Darwin noted that there appeared to be a lower percentage of boys among births occurring outside marriage. More recently, a study of women in Kenya found a lower proportion of sons among females without a longstanding bond with one mate. Evidence from bird populations also suggests more male offspring among species where males occupy a secondary parenting role.
