By Chris Murphy and Katie Baldwin NEW Year's Eve revellers across the globe put their 2005 celebrations on hold last night to remember the countries stricken by Asia's tsunami disaster as the death toll rose to near 150,000.

Candlelit tributes were held the world over as party-goers paused to remember the carnage and devastation that visited south east Asia in the early hours of Boxing Day nearly a week ago.

Thousands of people came to a standstill on the biggest party night of the year to remember the lives lost and destroyed across 11 countries.

As the world's largest aid operation continued United Nations humanitarian chief Jan Egeland admitted that an exact figure on the amount of people dead would be impossible to calculate.

The greatest humanitarian crisis of all time is still gripping badly hit areas as rescue workers continue to reach remote parts battered by the huge waves.

A three-minute silence will be held across the UK on Wednesday.
