More than 10,000 people flocked to the city centre event to see a massive fireworks display at midnight which lit up the night sky.
Leeds City Council teamed up with events company International Fun Fairs for the entertainment, following a row earlier this year when the Council scrapped its plans for live music in the square on New Year's Eve.
Engineers worked tirelessly to set everything up in time for the event, which included the dodgems, children's rides and traditional treats like toffee apples on sale.
The highlight of the fairground rides was a huge tower lifting thrill-seekers 125ft into the air before sending them plunging towards the ground at 60mph while the Maze of Terror - the only one in the UK - scared revellers with its mix of special effects and live actors.
