Andrew Robinson A witness to a crime was shot at as he tried to stop a robber escaping from a supermarket in West Yorkshire.

The shooting happened after an attempted armed robbery at the Spar supermarket in Leeds Road, Birstall, on Thursday at 8.15pm.

The suspect, who fled the shop after struggling with the owner, was pursued down the street by a man who witnessed the incident.

He fled down Leeds Road, on to South View and Sunnymount Terrace.

The robber fired the gun at his pursuer but missed. Nobody was injured.

West Yorkshire Police said the robber was believed to have escaped in a four-door Vauxhall Corsa.
