James Reed THE generosity of the British public showed no sign of drying up yesterday - but it could be some time before parts of the disaster zone see any help.
A staggering GBP45m had been pledged to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) by last night, and the Government followed up its commitment to provide GBP50m by offering to help transport the relief supplies paid for by the British public.
The business world in Yorkshire came forward with more offers of help and financial support while fans at New Year sporting fixtures in the region will be urged to back the appeal.
Elsewhere, Virgin chief Sir Richard Branson donated GBP50,000 to the relief effort. His Virgin airline is also planning a relief flight carrying bottled water supplies don-ated by store group Somerfield to Sri Lanka, along with clothing and blankets.
Other Virgin flights will carry shelter boxes, clothing, temporary housing and water purification supplies into the region.
Cheltenham Racecourse pledged GBP1 to the DEC Tsunami Earthquake Appeal for every paying customer at today's races.
