Grace Hammond MORE viewers watched non-terrestrial TV this Christmas than BBC1 or ITV1. For the first time, multi-channel viewing overtook the two main terrestrial channels.
Programmes on digital, satellite and cable accounted for 29.1 per cent of the audience over Christmas week, up 20 per cent on the previous year, according to figures from the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board (Barb).
BBC1 had a 27.2 per cent share (down 2.4 per cent on the previous year) and ITV1 a 22 per cent share (down 0.8 per cent) - the first time their joint share has dropped below 50 per cent during the Christmas period.
BBC2 also saw its audience share plummet by a quarter to 8.9 per cent. The Newcastle United v Arsenal game on December 29, shown on Sky Sports 1, was the most watched programme on multi-channel TV with an audience of 1.65 million.
The next four most watched programmes were all Premiership clashes. However, it was not all bad news for the BBC.
