To celebrate the dawn of a new year, we asked a collection of writers to look into their crystal balls to offer a personal perspective on their hopes for 2005.

BRITISH POLITICS Anthony Seldon is author of Blair, the biography of the Prime Minister.

I ALREADY believe that 2005 will go down as one of the vintage years in British politics. The General Election is very likely to come on May 5, and the result remains wide open.

Tony Blair could achieve a big majority in which case he will entrench his New Labour vision on his party's policy, and on the composition of his ministerial team for his third term.
