(From Yorkshire Post)
Ian Appleyard Former Athletic striker looks to help Blades leapfrog old mates NOT so long ago, Andy Liddell was telling the world to forget about catching Championship leaders Wigan Athletic.
Eight weeks down the line, the Sheffield United winger must be happy that he didn't put his money where his mouth is.
In an interview with the Yorkshire Post in November, Liddell insisted that Wigan already had the title wrapped up, describing his former club as "far and away the best team in the league." But how quickly things can change.
From a position six points clear at the top of the table, Wigan have dropped to third in the League, and now sit five points behind leaders Ipswich Town.
If they should lose today at Bramall Lane, they will be leap-frogged by the Blades who are now emerging as genuine rivals for automatic promotion after losing just once in the last 17 games.
The wheels are in danger of coming off the Wigan bandwagon but Liddell - who spent six years with the Lancashire club before joining the Blades last summer - believes they will still go up at the end of the season.
