BRATISLAVA, Jan 1 (CTK) - Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic pointed out his country's entry into the European Union and NATO last year and said that Slovakia has gained the reputation of a reliable partner in his New Year's speech today.
He promised citizens to strive for improving their living standards. The economic and social reforms are important, but it is necessary to see to it that they are the least painful for citizens as possible.
The government introduced partial reforms of health care, education and the pension system, which financially burden Slovaks. It has been praised for the reforms abroad, but at home it has been criticised for them.
"I have had the opportunity to attend on behalf of all of you meetings of representatives of NATO states in Istanbul, in the headquarters of the supreme European institutions in Brussels as well as in the United Nations. I had a reason to be proud. Slovakia is now perceived as a reliable partner, Slovakia is spoken about as never before, with respect, it is seen as an attractive country which has a good outlook," said Gasparovic who has been president since last June.
He said that he is convinced that if citizens continue to strive for mutual understanding, a promising future lies ahead of the country.
On the other hand, he said, it is necessary to point out that big economic differences have prevailed for many years between particular regions.
