Budapest, January 1 (MTI) - The president of the Hungarian Olympic Committee said the 2005 national budget and the 2004 law on sport were a step back to a centrally regulated sports administration system that devalued civil groups and public initiatives.
The law on sports assigned the Olympic Committee the role of a second-rate subsidiary institution, and the HUF 50m earmarked in the 2005 budget for the Committee was only a fraction of its needs, Pal Schmitt has told MTI in a New Year interview.
He said the 2005 budget halved the state funds available for competitive sports, but said he hoped the decision makers would increase the subsidies by HUF 0.6-0.8bn a few months into the year when they realise competitive sport clubs and federations are fighting for their survival.
