(From Canberra Times)
For a while 2004 was set to be a breakthrough year for two young Canberra soccer players trying to make a name in Europe.
But by December both Nathan Caldwell and Andrew Barisic where back in Australia after splitting from their European teams.
Both members of Canberra Deakin's National Youth League championship winning team in early 2004, they have signed to play for the Melbourne Knights in the Victorian Premier League for the remainder of the season, hoping to find one of the new A-League clubs.
While the future is still bright for both players it has taken a different course than either intended when they packed up their dreams of being soccer professionals and moved overseas.
The NYL player of the year, Caldwell joined giant Polish team Widzew Lodz. Although only a second-division team, Widzew Lodz is one of the most popular teams in soccer-mad Poland and less than a decade ago was playing against the best in the world in the UEFA Champions League.
Barisic was given a two-year contract with German club Tennis Borussia Berlin.
