BEFORE YOU have your third helping of holiday ham, stop and take note. Partial data from the Food and Nutrition Research Institute's national nutrition survey for 2003 revealed some unsettling consequences of Filipinos' dietary and lifestyle habits.
For instance, 22 out of 100 Filipino adults are hypertensive. In the 20 to 29 age bracket, four in 10 are prehypertensive, or are reaching hypertension levels.
The prevalence of diabetes among Filipino adults is now 3.4 percent. Compared to 1998 levels, the prevalence of diabetes in the 40- to 59-year age group has increased.
Three in 100 Filipino adults have impaired fasting glucose. Those in the prediabetes stage are at greater risk of developing diabetes within 10 years.
Partial results of the survey were announced to the press recently. Other data are scheduled for release in February 2005.
