CHICAGO-Gloom dampened the holiday revelry as graphic scenes of tragedy in the countries devastated by tsunamis were repeatedly flashed on television. The festive atmosphere was suddenly transformed into a depressing silence with merry-making in the bars and hotel lobbies seemingly put on hold. Outside, a subzero temperature registering the coldest Christmas here in decades reinforced the message that nature's wrath is upon mankind.
Prophets of doom have blamed man's potential for precipitating Armageddon through his wanton neglect of the environment. It may well be that the end of the world will not be caused by a global nuclear war, but by an environmental disaster brought on by Mother Nature herself.
Wailing mothers who have lost their families, heaps of dead bodies buried in common graves, and coastal areas in Sri Lanka looking desolate with dead bodies everywhere. These are the graphic images of the catastrophe caused by tsunamis from the Indian Ocean.
Tens of thousands of people have been reported dead, with thousands more missing, making this one of the worst natural tragedies, if not the worst, of all times.
