EACH of us has our own traditions that we believe would ensure us of a prosperous and peaceful new year. In our house, we go through several "routines": each member of the family is required to eat seven pieces of grapes; cupboards, closets and drawers are opened; and we go through the house ringing bells and making much noise.
We may not be aware of it but we may have been practicing feng shui every New Year's Eve our whole lives.
Filipinos are very fond of firecrackers every New Year's Eve, sometimes (or most of the time?) unmindful of its dangers. Firecrackers and lots of noise drive away evil or unwelcome spirits and greet the incoming year. According to feng shui consultant Merlina Merton, however, extremely loud firecrackers and noise disturb energy field and the garden spirits of a house. Shock waves from loud firecrackers also supposedly threaten the energy bodies of unborn and young children, old people and house pets.
