EVERYONE agrees that the Philippine movie industry, once the third biggest in the world (after Hollywood and India), is now in dire straits.

From 85 titles in 2000, the number has gone down to 55 movies in 2004, and the number includes entries in the ongoing Metro Manila Film Festival.

At the recent Sining Taktakan, the last in a monthly series of fora for students by the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Ed Cabagnot, head of the CCP film division, laid the blame for the dismal output on high taxes, piracy, the economy, tough foreign competition, cable TV and high technology.

Panelists

Forum panelists were Ed Lejano of the University of the Philippines Film Institute, Ronald Arguelles of Cinema One, and producer Tony Gloria of Unitel.
