"Panaghoy sa Suba" (The Call of the River)
D: Cesar Montano
S: Cesar Montano, Juliana Palermo
SET in the 1940s during the dark days of the Japanese occupation of the country, Cesar Montano's allegorical albeit protracted period drama traces how the surging tides of socio-political changes encroach into the lives of poor, small-town folks.
Using the pristine waters of Bohol's Loboc river as backdrop and plot device (at the time, villagers had to meet, mingle and wade through the river that connected the surrounding Visayan countryside via rafts and bancas), the lyrically photographed film weaves its tale around the travails of its main protagonist, Duroy (Montano), a principled boatman tasked with the responsibility of supporting a family haunted by paternal abandonment, and his relationship with the people around him.
