BOCAUE, Bulacan-The year 2004 for this town, considered the country's firecracker capital, literally ended with a bang after a fire and a series of explosions hit a strip of firecracker stalls in Barangay Turo yesterday morning, killing at least seven people.
The victims were between 9 and 18 years old. Most of them were relatives of caretakers of the stalls that were operating for 24 hours in the past few days to accommodate customers rushing to buy firecrackers for the New Year's Eve revelry.
Supt. Arthur Oprecio, Bulacan fire marshal, said the more than two-hour fire broke out at about 6 a.m. at the King Kenneth Fireworks along Gov. F. Halili Avenue, near the Bocaue exit of the North Luzon Expressway.
Oprecio said the fire spread to 14 other stalls, at least four makeshift firecracker warehouses and at least three houses in the area.
