TIRED of unfulfilled promises of top government leaders, people in the impoverished town of Villareal in Samar initiated what could be a first in the country: construct an 8-km cemented road in the "bayanihan" spirit of volunteerism.
Since Nov. 13, they have taken it upon themselves to cement the 67-year-old stretch of dirt road linking their town to the rest of the province. Villareal (pop.: 68,000), which means "real villa" in Spanish, is more than 100 years old and one of the oldest in Eastern Visayas.
The "Villareal Bayanihan Road Project" involves building a two-lane road covering seven barangays-Macopa, Igot, Nagkaduha, Malunoy, Canmukat, Lusong and San Fernando.
The residents first cemented the road in San Fernando. When this writer visited the area on the first week of December, 130 meters of the stretch had already been cemented.
"This is our long cherished dream: to have a paved road leading to the town proper," said the town's mayor, neophyte politician Renato la Torre. Cemented streets are found only in the town center.
