(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
DESPITE failing to formalize his Grandmaster title, Mark Paragua is still the highest-ranked among Filipino players in the World Chess Federation (Fide) based on the latest January 2005 rating list.
The 20-year-old Paragua, the most bemedaled Filipino athlete in the Vietnam Southeast Asian Games, has a rating of 2586, the highest among Filipinos in the Fide list.
Paragua went on a romp in 2004, winning top awards three consecutive times in the prestigious Alushta trilogy Grandmaster Tournament (GMT) held in Crimea, Ukraine, a former Soviet republic popularly known as the bastion of modern chess.
He was champion in the first and the third, and a runner-up in the second, thus earning three GM norms in a record span of 26 days.
In the recent Open Tournament in Singapore this December, Paragua tied for first to hike to five the number of GM norms tucked under his belt.
Sadly, however, he has not received his GM title up to this day.
