(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
THERE was the grudge match to end all grudge matches, Marco Antonio clipping Erik Morales in the third installment of their heated rivalry. There was the fall of Mike Tyson to the relatively unknown Danny Williams. Then there was the Bernard Hopkins' demolition of Oscar De La Hoya.
And yet, a leading newspaper in the US snubbed those blockbuster fights and voted as the Fight of the Year the one match that didn't have a clear winner.
The El Paso Times picked the 12-round thriller between Filipino ring sensation Manny Pacquiao and Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez for the World Boxing Association/International Boxing Federation as the year's best bout.
The accolade was the latest involving Pacquiao, who is set to be honored as Sportsman of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association.
Popular boxing website Eastside.com also voted the 26-year-old Pacquiao the No. 4 best pound-for-pound boxer in the world, behind Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Kostya Tszyu.
The El Paso Times said the Pacquiao-Marquez match displayed an "incredible ebb-and-flow and dramatic shifts in momentum."
