BAGUIO CITY-Why go through all the trouble of placating a spent force?

Some military officials raised this point on Tuesday when President Macapagal-Arroyo met again with the widow and the former rival of slain rebel priest Conrado Balweg, founder of the militia Cordillera People's Liberation Army (CPLA), officials present in the meeting said.

Mayor Braulio Yaranon, co-chair of the Cordillera Regional Peace and Order Council, said the military and government officials told Corazon Cortel-Balweg and Mayor Mailed Molina of Bucloc, Abra, that they are still concerned about the factionalism that continues to plague the CPLA, particularly after it lost Balweg.

Balweg was killed in his Abra home on Dec. 31, 1999, without unifying his former army.

Molina and former reporter Abrino Aydinan broke away from Balweg in 1993, six years after the latter signed a peace agreement with former President Corazon Aquino on the heels of the 1986 Edsa Revolution.
