(From Philippine Daily Inquirer)
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO-The Filipino tradition of assembling 12 round fruits for good luck and prosperity during the New Year's Eve media noche seemed harder to follow now.
At the public market in this capital city of Pampanga, the prices of fruits had gone up between 10 and 20 percent on Thursday, said vendor Florencia Vergara.
The 76-year-old Vergara, who has maintained a small stall of fruits and dried fish in the last 60 years, said sales had not been brisk.
"People don't have much money nowadays," she said.
Per kilogram, mabolo went for P20; star apple, P20; chico, P50; apple mango, P25; chesa, P20; dalanghita, P15; papaya, P30; chestnuts, P150; pomelo, P60; guava, P60; and grapes, P140.
A small pineapple costs P25 each while a Fuji apple costs P15. Ponkan oranges sold for P20 apiece while watermelon went for P50 each.
