BAGUIO CITY-The government may be going all-out in its support of a revitalized mining industry in order to contain a P200-billion deficit, but President Macapagal-Arroyo is making sure environmental saboteurs will not hold sway in this or any other industry.
The President on Monday said she had formed an intelligence-gathering group devoted to environmental crimes, and would be urging legislation to make them capital crimes.
She said her government would prove to environmentalists as well as indigenous Filipinos that it valued ecological harmony over economics, particularly after the recent disasters in Luzon that were blamed on illegal logging.
"We will have meetings and consultations with the nongovernment organizations on how to best protect and preserve the interest of the indigenous Filipinos and the environment. If necessary, we will come up with proposed legislation in order to preserve the environment," Ms Arroyo told reporters at Mansion House here.
Baboo Mondo[currency]edo, an environmentalist connected with the Baguio Regreening Movement, asked the President her position on "ecological security."
