HAPPY New Year! Despite all the catastrophes and calamities that beset us in the old year, we look forward to this new one with hope and faith in God's provident mercy and in our own resiliency as a people.

Concepcion "Ching" Dadufalza, one of the best-loved teachers of the University of the Philippines, who passionately taught, perhaps, three generations of students (including our publisher, Isagani Yambot) since 1950, passed away a few days before 2004 ended. Death came to the 82-year-old former professor a few days after the second anniversary of her retirement from teaching. She was buried last Thursday, after moving necrological rites were held by her disciples from across the generations. With her passing, a pillar of UP and a model for the teaching profession is gone.

For Dadufalza's retirement last Dec. 16, 2002, her disciples put up a book of essays, recalling the great mentor. Edited by essayist-poet Gemino H. Abad and shepherded by Susan Villareal-Sulit, the book is titled "Who's Afraid of Ching Dadufalza?" and is billed as "Festchrift by the Fearless Ones." Meaning, as Abad put it, those who "are legion, living and dead, silent and articulate, who love her and would cherish her for all time. They are fearless because they love one who is a Fury of truth, a Fate of endless quest, a Muse of all human worth."
