Politicians and social activists yesterday put aside differences and united to launch an unprecedented fund-raising operation to help tsunami victims.

Almost all rallies planned for New Year's Day have been cancelled and around 20 political parties and social groups said they would instead focus on a week-long relief operation starting today.

"We are standing united for the first time to lend a helping hand to the tsunami victims," Democratic Party chairman Lee Wing-tat said.
