It seems like the Core here at the Mount is loved and hated at the same time. When we write our papers and cover letters, we rave about how this institution has made us well-rounded individuals by offering us a true liberal arts education. With the same vigor, however, we will turn to our friends and roommates and complain about doing work in classes that we have to take that have "nothing" to do with our majors. Recently, I have heard and read many complaints about one particular department so crucial to the Core. From such negativity comes my apology, my defense if you will, for the theology department here at the Mount.
We come to college because we don't know everything. Our applications to an institution of higher learning are de facto admissions of our ignorance. A university should be a place of sufficient diversity and spirited debate to challenge our thoughts and beliefs. A requirement of theology does not force us to believe things we do not want to believe. Rather, it gives us the incredible opportunity to grow, whoever we are. For those outside of the Abrahamic tradition, the courses offer a different perspective on the world and an insight to many of the beliefs that permeate our culture. To non-Catholic Christians, a chance is given to explore and better understand the traditions and beliefs of their brothers and sisters in Christ to work towards the reunification of his church. ...
