Buying electronics should be as easy as finding hay in a haystack. They're in almost every store you visit, from local merchants to giant discounters, not to mention a mountain of Web sites.

Even stores known for stocking pens and paper clips--Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples--carry a wide range of digital cameras. And retailers heralded for low-priced clothing, groceries, and household products--BJ's, Costco, Sam's Club, Target, and Wal-Mart, for example--sell pricey LCD or plasma TVs.

For consumers, that looks like good news. Presumably, with more stores competing for your electronics dollar, you get more choice, better service, and lower prices. But ...
