High-tech games are becoming the gifts that keep on taking. Subscription fees and extra charges on top of the initial purchase price are commonplace.
Games are no longer limited to the computer or the game console. Even some console-based games are designed for online play, too. Madden NFL 2005 for Xbox Live, for example, allows players to form online teams of 32 players that compete in tournaments.
The fine print on the boxes might not make it clear when there's an extra fee involved. For example, Final Fantasy XI for PlayStation 2 says there is a monthly subscription after a 30-day trial. The cost-$12.95 a month-becomes clear during the initial setup. If you use Xbox Live online, it costs $50 a year to renew. If you want to play, you have to pay.
