SIR: James Franklin's suggestion to assign a few smart mathematicians and statisticians to the problem of climate scepticism (Letters, November 2004) indicates an unfamiliarity with the problem. Climate is essentially a coupled, non-linear, chaotic system. Even the IPCC admitted that. So no mathematician or statistician would attempt to model this system because it is intrinsically impossible. Nor would any scientist trained in the physical sciences, physics, chemistry and geology.
However, the immigrants from the social sciences, finding little to do in their area of ineptitude, wandered into the world of physical science.
