THERE HAS OFTEN been a degree of tension in the relationship between democratic politics and religion over the last hundred years or so, and indeed ever since democracy in something like its modern form has been either the aim of political action or an established system of government. This tension has possibly been less in those states in which Protestant Christianity is the dominant, if not established, religion than in those where Catholicism is dominant.
Needless to say, such tension is far more important for some other religions, most notably Islam, though so far that religion has fairly peacefully coexisted with the democratisation of Indonesia and Turkey, ...
