(From Nottingham Evening Post)
Stephen and Rosina Whitmore are now living in a hotel after the fire destroyed their home. Even the clothes they are wearing were bought by a friend.
The couple and their 23-year-old son David had a narrow escape when their house in Walker Street, Sneinton, went up in flames early on Monday.
"I was waking up to go to work when I heard crackling and popping," said 51-year-old Mr Whitmore, a trucker for Colwick-based firm Thomas Long .
"When my wife opened the door to the bedroom and all the smoke came in I just shouted, 'Get out! Get out!'. My son made it downstairs and I remember pushing Rosina down. The fumes and heat was so intense and you could feel your hair singeing.
"We just went out in to the street and were taken in by our neighbours, Linda and Keith Voce. Another 30 seconds and I don't think we would've got out alive." The family lost everything in their home of 26 years - wedding photos, football trophies, and personal memorabilia.
And as they sat in the Queen's Medical Centre thankful to still be alive, their friends and colleagues rallied round to help.
