For this fascinating project, saxophonist Greg Wall took his inspiration from the prophecies contained in the Old Testament book of Ezekiel and (as he explains in the liner notes) "the traditional melodies used to chant them in the synagogue," which "have been with us for close to two thousand years." In those same notes he also cites Talmudic and Kabbalistic riddles and parables. His musical approach is both conceptually fascinating and viscerally compelling: supported on most tracks by keyboardist Shai Bachar and drummer Aaron Alexander, he combines melodic elements taken from traditional Hebrew cantillation with improvised sections and fragments of more modern musical ideas; on two tracks, he is accompanied by the legendary guitarist Gary Lucas, who provides layers of heavily-treated chordal washes and ethereal shreds of melody as a backdrop for Wall's ...
