Most American listeners were first exposed to the work of Estonian composer Arvo Part when the ECM label released a collection of his compositions under the title Tabula Rasa (817 764-2, 1984). For the most part, these were quiet, if intense and spiritual compositions, and were characterized by repetitive patterns and relatively static harmonic movement. Part was quickly lumped into the minimalist school, and he found a significant listenership in the United States. Later releases of Part's choral works, particularly his Passion setting Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Secundum Joannem (ECM 837 109-2, 1988) and Miserere (ECM 847 539-2, 1990), confirmed the popular perception of him as both a mystic and a post-minimalist.
