The Playel-Trio St. Petersburg is one of very few Russian trios (perhaps the only one) dedicated to the performance of classical and early romantic music on period instruments. The trio's recordings tend to focus on works by composers with connections to its own home town. In 2001 it released a recording of Anton Eberl's three opus 8 piano trios (Christophorus CHR 77237), and here the group follows up with an assortment of chamber works by the same composer. Eberl (1765-1807) was born and trained in Vienna, but spent several years as a court composer to the Russian czar in St. Peterburg, a sojourn that had subtle but significant effects on his compositional style.
