A FILIPINO nanny has brought the career of Home Secretary David Blunkett to an inglorious end. Last night, Mr Blunkett bowed to the inevitable and resigned after the allegations that he intervened in visa applications. The affair had become a Whitehall farce.

Claims by his former lover, Kimberly Quinn, that he fast-tracked the visa application from her nanny, Leoncia Casalme, led to an official inquiry. But it was the extra claim from the nanny yesterday, that her application for a visa to visit Austria was "fast- tracked", which proved the last straw.

This day of high drama had started badly, when Labour MP Bob Marshall-Andrews called for Mr Blunkett to resign and went on to say that he felt that Mr Blunkett was "seriously unbalanced" since he said that he wanted to …
