After being fired by the Giants last year, Jim Fassel took a job as an offensive consultant with the Ravens. He has been working with quarterback Kyle Boller and will be on the sideline Sunday when the Ravens play the Giants in Baltimore.
TSN: How's life as a consultant?
FASSEL: It's a job everybody should have one time in life. I describe it like the difference between a father and grandfather. As a father, you deal with all the problems, all the issues. As a grandfather, all you do is enjoy (the children), then walk away and go to sleep at night.
TSN: What are your specific responsibilities?
FASSEL: It's a three-pronged deal. No. 1 is Kyle Boller. I don't coach him on his reads and keys. That's too many voices in a guy's ear. I try to work with him on his mechanics. That's really the starting point. I talk about his schedule, how he prepares for the game, how he warms up before the game, point out things he doesn't think about. I'm trying to build his confidence and give him structure to be successful. The second thing is with the offensive coaches and the game plan. I don't make the game plan. I just offer suggestions. The third thing is with Brian (Billick). I'm a sounding board for him. It's unique. Brian and I are good friends. I can say, "Did you think of this?" As a coach, you make a lot of decisions that could go either way.
TSN: Is this something you see yourself doing beyond this season?
FASSEL: No. My goal, without a doubt, is to be a head coach next season. No question about it.
