Why can't an NFL owner ever fire himself? Why can't he just announce one day at a press conference that he botched his responsibilities so badly that he absolutely must be replaced? Immediately. From this day forth, he's removing himself from direct input into all decisions related to football. He'll appoint a committee of respected advisers recommended by the league, which then will pick a football guy to take over operations.

Randy Lerner, are you understanding this?

Lerner, the young and stumbling owner of the Browns, should break new ground here and get out of the way before further destroying this reeling franchise. Since his father died in October 2002, giving Randy control of the team, he has shown a remarkable inability to do anything right. Try to understand this train of thought: He forced out Carmen Policy, who governed some of the 49ers' finest moments, and could find no use for consultant Ron Wolf, the architect of the Packers' Super Bowl teams.

Yet he invested all personnel power in coach and buddy Butch Davis, whose regular-season record with the Browns before this year was 21-27. Oh, and let's give Butch a contract extension, too, as a reward ...
