Sep. 28--WellPoint Inc., a huge national health insurance firm, said yesterday that it is planning to buy WellChoice, Inc., the New York company that operates all Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield plans.
The $6.5-billion deal shouldn't change much for the average consumer or employer in the short term, at least, but will further consolidate and shift the health insurance landscape.
WellPoint operates under the Blue Cross Blue Shield moniker as well, and with WellChoice under its belt, it would have more than 33 million members in 14 states,...
