Sep. 17--ALTHA -- Altha residents say their only school is an integral part of life in this town of 500.
At homecoming, all the adults stop working to watch the parade, residents say. The teachers at Altha or in nearby Blountstown are frequently hometown folks who left for college and then returned. Many of these teachers are the children of teachers going back generations, residents say.
And now, when parents, students and teachers in Calhoun County bump into one another, the topic of conversation almost always turns to the possible consolidation of the high school portion of Altha Public School and Blountstown High School.
Advocates against the move include the pastor of Altha First Baptist, a Blountstown restaurant owner and Carol Finuff, the assistant clerk at Altha Town Hall.
