Independent schools offer an alternative to state provision. They are fee-charging, and provide single-sex, boarding, philosophical or religious education.

The Independent Schools Council, which looks after 2,400 UK independent schools free from local authority control, suggests that, contrary to popular belief, they are not populated solely by children of rich and privately-educated parents. It says four in every ten independent school pupils' parents were not privately educated themselves.
