I couldn't agree more with the article entitled "Assault on the Electoral College" (June 26) by George Detweiler, especially his exposure of the idiocy of, not to mention the blatant unconstitutionality of, the proposed "National Popular Vote Plan" espoused by a number of political has-beens.
Seemingly periodically, schemes to elect the president directly by popular vote appear out of nowhere. Congressional hearings are held, and proponents of direct election assail the electoral college system with vituperative remarks. The last such period was around 1969-1970, and the frenzy in the liberal press against the electoral college was almost unbelievable.
Unfortunately for the position of those pressing for direct election, no responsible case has been made for a simple direct election. Proponents are naive enough to believe that there will always be only two candidates and that fraud does not occur in ...
