Early in the nineteenth century, ownership of frameable prints in the United States was limited to the elite. However, by 1850 prints had become accessible to almost everyone, thanks to the introduction of lithography and the appearance of a number of American publishers who produced popular prints designed and priced for the general public. These were generally small, hand-colored lithographs with subjects that included views from around the country, important events and individuals, religious subjects, and scenes from daily life.
